PICK-UP SCHEDULE

RECYCLING (CURB-SIDE) – MONDAY

REGULAR TRASH (GARAGE DOOR AND VISIBLE FROM THE STREET) – MONDAY & THURSDAY

HEAVY TRASH (CURB-SIDE) – THURSDAY

The Civic Club has contracted with GFL Environmental (acquiror of VF Waste Services) to provide “garage door” garbage service to members in good standing on Mondays and Thursdays. GFL will collect up to six bags and/or cans of traditional household garbage and lawn clippings from the area of your garage door. The “garage door” means an accessible location near your driveway or gate.

GFL will pick up a maximum of six (6) bags or cans from the garage door.  If you have more than six bags or cans, then up to six (6) additional bags/cans may be brought to the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before pickup day. In addition, all tree trimmings, excessive landscape materials and carpet should be cut in four-foot lengths, bundled with string or twine and brought to the curb. Bundles should not weigh more than 40 pounds.

GFL observes the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a scheduled pickup day, then your garbage will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day.   From time to time, GFL at its option may perform pickups on the holidays above.

If GFL misses your house, for fastest service you should call them directly at their customer service line:  (281) 368-8397 and report the problem.  GFL should send a truck by to correct the mistake. If you are having difficulty with GFL, please send an e-mail to sanitation@aftonoaks.org or to wcacshouston@gflenv.com to report the problem.

GFL will take away heavy trash, including furniture, grills (no propane), boxes and appliances when placed at the curb every Thursday.  Members are limited to a maximum of two (2) items per Thursday.  Members should be patient, as such items may be collected by a different truck than that used for normal pickup. GFL will only pickup refrigerators or freezers that have had freon removed and been tagged by an appliance repair professional. You may also consider calling used appliance dealers or charities regarding the disposal of old appliances.   If you are having difficulty getting an item to the curb, call GFL at (281) 368-8397 to arrange for a special pickup at extra cost.

The services contracted for with GFL are for regular household garbage and certain heavy items only. The following items, while not an exhaustive list, will not be picked up, even on Thursdays: construction materials, lumber, large and extremely heavy tree trunks, lawn mowers, roof shingles, gas tanks/cans, hazardous material, excessive amounts of landscape debris. You must arrange for a private disposal service to haul these and other similar materials away.   Please see the attached AOCC Trash Protocol below for a full listing of unaccepted items and general rules:

In addition to standard waste pickup, GFL provides all of Afton Oaks with recycling services.  They collect newspaper, paper, magazines, cardboard, phone books, catalogs, all plastic containers, and aluminum every Monday.  Glass is not accepted in recycle bins, please dispose of glass with your regular household waste. There is no need to separate recyclables.   Bins are provided to property addresses and should remain with the property.  GFL will replace bins damaged due to normal wear and tear.  If bins are damaged by causes other than normal wear and tear or otherwise need to be replaced then a replacement bin charge of $15.00 will be added to the property’s AOCC account.  To receive a replacement recycling bin, call (281) 368-8397.   Please put your newspapers in grocery sacks or under heavier items to keep them from blowing away.   The above Protocol contains more information on recyclable items.

The Civic Club’s contract with GFL operates under the City of Houston’s garbage sponsorship program, and the Civic Club receives an allocation of municipal tax money to partially offset the costs of the GFL contract.
